Bikini celebrates its 70 th year of birth today, ie 5th July. Since the invention of the bikini by Parisian designer Louis Réard bikini was considered the sexiest invention ever.
The history of the two-piece :
Mechanical engineer turned fashion designer Louis Réard took over his mother’s lingerie business near Les Folies Bergères in Paris in around 1940. His intention in designing it was simple. Once when he visited St. Tropez beaches, he noticed women rolling up the edges of their swimsuits to get a better tan. This inspired him to design a swimsuit with the midriff exposed.
His first bikini model was sewn from four triangles with news paper pattern. This pretty piece of invention was then made to appear in Paris on July 5th, 1946 at the Fête de l’Eau beauty pageant. Réard never knew that he was creating a history!!
The introduction came as a big cultural shock and the scandalous two-piece was forbidden on certain European beaches, but by the late 1950s, movie stars began to wear it, and it soon became synonymous with seduction and sex appeal.
The tiny Swimsuit gradually gained popularity and has since become one of fashion’s biggest inventions.
